About Us

CampManitou operates as an inclusive organization serving children and youth from many diverse backgrounds without regard to heritage, handicap, color, race or creed. This provides a healthy mix of children with a wide variety of personalities and aptitudes to challenge the innovative and creative talents of the adults that serve them. Historically a particular emphasis has always been placed on inviting children who might otherwise never have the opportunity to enjoy a camping experience. In 1930 the Juvenile Court of the day asked for help in meeting the needs of troubled youth. In response, the YMCA and a coalition of Service Clubs with financial help from the Winnipeg Foundation founded CampManitou. For 65 years the YMCA provided a vital service to thousands of Winnipeg area children providing subsidies for large numbers of children lacking the resources to attend camp. Since 1995 the Rotary, Kinsmen, Lions, Kiwanis, Optimist and Cosmopolitan Service Clubs of Winnipeg have carried on the tradition established by the YMCA  and have enabled thousands more to enjoy a healthy, exciting and often life changing camping experience. In partnership with inner city and other community agencies such as West Broadway Center, Rossbrook House, MAMAWIWICHITATA Center, Community Friendship Centers, inner city churches and others the camp seeks to serve the many thousands of deserving but often financially disadvantaged children giving them an opportunity to build friendships and memories to last a lifetime. A Board of Directors representing the Service Clubs and Friends of Camp Manitou along with a CampDirector set policies and look after the management and operation of the camp.
